History

The hotel takes its name from the building itself, Edificio San Fernando. San Fernando honors the patron saint of the Spanish Army Corps of Engineers and engineers, generally. The building’s architectural features draw from the anti-traditional elegance of the Art Deco era. Simple volumes and ornamental elements reflect an admiration for the industrial. Beauty is found in craftsmanship and symmetry.

Built in 1947 as an apartment building, the space is filled with enviable architectural details—casement windows, encaustic tile floors and wainscoting in the corridors and lobby, and stained glass. The space has been revitalized in keeping with the rich color and history of Mexico, melding old world elegance with new world style. The historic building has been retrofitted with the needs of contemporary travelers, work from the rooftop before exploring or tuck into the richly furnished lounge for a cocktail and lose track of time. Neighboring Parque Mexico features an ample dog park—perfectly fitting with the Bunkhouse philosophy that dogs are always welcome.
